The European Commission, DG X, has published a call for applications for support under the ARIANE programme in the field of books and reading. This call for applications, under the 1998 budget, is likely to be the last call under the ARIANE programme. Support may be given for projects in the following areas: - Translation grants: . For translation of 20th century works of literature; . For translation of plays; . For translation of reference works and studies; - Cooperative projects to improve promotion of and access to books and reading; - Improvement of professionals' skills working towards the knowledge and dissemination of European literature. Applications must be submitted to the Commission on the standard form, obtainable from the Commission's Culture Unit. Projects may include participants from outside the EU, in particular from those Central and Eastern European countries which have concluded Agreements with the EU to participate in programmes in the cultural field. Other eligible countries would be Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, and Malta and Cyprus.
