CORDIS, the European Community's R&D Information Service, has launched a new World Wide Web Home Page dedicated to the Community's specific research programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH II).

The BIOTECH II programme (1994-1998) implements research, technological development and demonstration activities in the field of biotechnology. The CORDIS BIOTECH Home Page provides an overview of the main objectives and tasks of each of the different research areas covered, as laid out in the BIOTECH Work Programme. It also provides information on projects already underway and on the results of completed projects. Other information includes details of how to apply for BIOTECH Training Fellowships, a "What's New?" section, information on biotechnology related events and links to related information on the Commission's EUROPA server, as well as on other Web sites in the biotechnology domain.

One of the three specific programmes implementing the "Life Sciences and Technologies" domain of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme, BIOTECH II has contributed some ECU 400 million to over 300 research projects in this vital area over the past four years. A further batch of projects will be funded in 1998, following the programme's fourth call for proposals which closed in October 1997.

The aim of the programme is to improve our basic biological knowledge of living systems and increase productivity in a sustainable fashion, with respect to applications in agriculture, industry, health, nutrition and the environment. It also considers the ethical and socio-economic implications of biotechnology.
