The European Federation of Biotechnology's Task Group on Public Perceptions in Biotechnology, supported by the EU's BIOTECH research programme, has published its seventh briefing paper, entitled "Dialogue in Biotechnology". The series aims to provide balanced and authoritative information about biotechnology to those with special interest and those in decision-making or opinion-forming positions throughout Europe.

Biotechnology is a field in which parties often hold strong, and opposing, positions. Constructive dialogue is therefore necessary to bring these parties together in attempting to resolve contentious issues. The paper draws on the experiences gained from organizing round table meetings throughout Europe on biotechnological subjects. It outlines the reasons for organizing such round tables, and describes aspects that should be considered when organizing them.

All the group's briefing papers are now available on the World Wide Web. Also available is a handbook, published in 1997, entitled "Biotechnology for non-specialists". This provides a guide to sources of information on biotechnology for interested parties from outside the sector.
