The European Commission has put forward a proposal for a single Directive governing the noise emissions of outdoor equipment such as construction machines and garden machinery (COM(1998) 46). This single Directive would update and replace nine separate Directives which currently address different types of machines. By streamlining the legislation in this area, the proposal will help to protect the health and well-being of citizens by reducing their exposure to noise and noise nuisance caused by outdoor machinery. The proposal would cover 55 types of outdoor equipment, and introduces for the first time limits on certain machines and tightens existing limits on others. In order to ensure buyers are fully informed, all equipment would require to be marked with its guaranteed maximum noise level.
