The European Commission has made an initial selection of 56 projects to receive Community support within the framework of the RECITE II programme launched in October 1996 (OJ No S 212 of 31.10.1996 p. 44). A total of 301 proposals dealing with cooperation between regions and cities in the European Union were received by the deadline of 15 May 1997. The 56 projects selected are distributed as follows among the various cooperation topics proposed: - Development of small and medium-sized businesses: 33 projects; - Environmental protection: 13 projects; - Equal opportunities between men and women: five projects; - Development of local potential: 5 projects. Following the completion of contract negotiations, these projects will receive a maximum of ECU 110 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
