The European Commission has published the second joint call for proposals, involving the FAIR, BIOMED and BIOTECH programmes, for research on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. The Commission is inviting proposals for research activities within the following areas of each programme, as set out in their respective Work Programmes: - Agriculture and Fisheries (FAIR): . Area 3: Generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods; . Area 4.4.2: Animal health; . Area 5.3.2: Health of aquacultured species; . Area 6: Objectives addressed by concertation; - Biotechnology (BIOTECH): . Area 4: Cell communication in neurosciences; - Biomedicine and health (BIOMED): . Area 3: Brain research; . Area 4: Research on diseases with major socio-economic impact: from basic research into clinical practice. A detailed list of the research themes to be addressed is contained in the call for proposals. Some funding may be available to facilitate the participation of entities from Central and Eastern European countries, countries of the former Soviet Union, and, for BIOMED only, developing countries. Proposers must clearly indicate the origin of the TSE-infected samples which they intend to use, the quantities and the uses they plan to make of these samples. Proposals must also comply with all national ethical and safety provisions and existing international and European ethical guidelines.
