 The innovative production technology of reinforced titanium based cermets for extreme conditions

Description of the project offered:
Topic: FETOPEN-01-2016-2017:FET-Open research and innovation actions
The current stage of technology and manufacturing development in the world requires the development and introduction of new classes of innovative materials able to effectively work in extreme environments of parts, machinery and vehicles.
In frame of this project it is proposed to develop a principally new production technology of metal-ceramic composites, consisting of reinforced titanium matrix and superhard ceramic eutectic inclusions based on refractory compounds, which provides the best ratio of physical and mechanical properties. The process involves obtaining of eutectic powder, consisting of a matrix of refractory compounds (eg, boron carbide) reinforced with inclusions of other refractory compounds with different morphology and their subsequent compaction using reinforced titanium matrix. Synthesis of eutectic powders of selected systems with different surface morphology of the particles could be conducted by combined methods of melts spraying and directional solidification. The formation of reinforced titanium matrix will be carried out directly during the synthesis of metal-ceramic composites at high temperatures due to the effect of self-reinforcing. This approach allows to realize the unique ratio of physical and mechanical properties due to the formation of defect-free boundary interface between titanium-based matrix and reinforcement on the base of refractory compounds. Previous studies indicate that the strength of the composite can reach 1300MPa at plasticity of 15% without additional manufacturing operations.
Expected results.
As a result of this project we expect to develop innovative production technology of metal-ceramic composites with strength of 1000-1500 MPa, hardness - 35-45 GPa and fracture toughness higher than 25 MPa m1/2.
The technology allows to use such materials in the following areas:
• as high-temperature structural materials (instead of metals) with working temperature higher than 1000 °C (including parts for turbine engines);
• as new superhard tool materials that do not contain expensive high-pressure metastable phases (diamond, boron nitride);
• as a highly efficient wear-resistant materials for abrasion wear;
• as tribotechnical materials for the manufacturing of seals nodes for high-pressure assemblies and so on.
• as composites for high-capacity cathodes of lithium batteries and power sources (current increasing to 750A hour/kg)
