Description of the project offered:
AIN, Asociacion de la Industria Navarra, and UPNA, Universidad Publica de Navarra, are preparing a FP7 proposal for the new EU call identifier FP7-2013-NMP-ENV-EeB, and the topic entitled EeB.NMP.2013-3 “Integration of technologies for energy-efficient solutions in the renovation of public buildings”. The funding scheme of this topic is a DEMO-targeted collaborative project.

Project summary
The objective of this project is to demonstrate, at least in two demonstration sites, in two different climatic conditions and with different end-users, how, by means of integration of different technologies, an improvement of energy performance can be achieved at district scale. The demo is addressed to public-owned non-residential buildings.

The Universidad Publica de Navarra is one of these demonstration sites required (Climatic Zone II, academic use, multibuilding). This Spanish consortium is looking for another demonstration site in the north (or central-north) of Europe to join our consortium.

Our project has a clear demonstrator character and all research activities will be led and developed thinking in their applicability potential.

Expertise sought
The project approach (both for research and integration of innovative solutions) to reach a substantial reduction of energy consumption (at least 50%) of the district is the following one:

Block1: Local energy resources. On-site energy production through combination of renewable energy sources (Solar photovoltaic, Geothermal, Wind, Co-generation, Biomass). Although the district may need energy from the grid, the objective is to have local production systems that inject energy into the grid at other times.

Block2: Energy information and management system. Measurement energy performance data is essential to improve building efficiency. This block deals with the following topics: performance monitoring software, intelligent software to build energy predictive models, sensors (occupancy, photoelectric daylight, CO2 & other sensors), data acquisition software, and communication systems.

Block3: Socio-economic aspects. In general, a high level of occupant well-being (thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual comfort) requires a high amount of energy and depends on people subjective factors. A trade-off between energy conservation and well-being has to be obtained. Therefore, a study of people behaviour patterns is important as a key factor to contribute to the overall goal of 50% energy consumption reduction.

Block4: Energy Efficient envelope for the existing buildings. The project will also deal with the reduction of the energy needs by applying technologies and materials for the envelope, both for walls and windows, whilst maintaining the aesthetical criteria and architectural features of the buildings.

Block5: Efficient equipment for energy use: new flexible and efficient equipment with advanced technologies for heating, cooling, lighting,...

Block6: Modelling and simulation to NZEB. New modelling and simulation approaches to take into account the overall physics and behaviour of the envelope and the equipment reducing the large gap between building energy performance as designed and the one finally achieved and measured.

Preferred partners
We are looking for partners to build FP7-PPP-EeB demonstration project focused on the integration of technologies for energy-efficient solutions at district scale.

In addition to a second public owned district, wanting to integrate innovative solutions in their district, we are looking for industrial partners having innovative solutions to be integrated in the demonstration sites, as well as research organizations to design, validate and help in the optimisation tasks.
