Research programme (EEC, Euratom) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - High- Temperature Materials -, 1977-1979

The programme was drawn up in accordance with the Council Resolution of 17 December 1970 concerning the procedures for adopting research and training programmes (Official Journal No L 16 of 20.1.1971). Initially adopted for a period of four years (1977-1980), the programme was replaced by a new four year programme as of 1 January 1980 and unused funds were allocated to the new programme.

This programme on High-Temperature Materials was pursuant to the JRC programme on Material Science of 1973-1976, the results of which highlighted the areas for further research. Sectors of high interest to the Commission and where progress is sensitive to the development of high-temperature materials were identified as:
- Chemical processes;
- Industrial and transport gas turbine utilization;
- Advanced energy generation and conversion systems.

The JRC's activities were centred on corrosion behaviour and creep studies in atmospheres existing in important industrial applications in the energy and chemical engineering sectors.
To undertake research on materials for service at high temperatures, to provide information services and to encourage cooperation.
Four projects:

- Meeting point Petten;

- The effect of the operational environment on the mechanical properties of high-temperature materials;

- Failure modes of high-temperature materials;

- The relationship between structure, impurities and properties of high-temperature materials.
The Commission, assisted by the board of governors of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), was responsible for the implementation of the programme by means of the services of the JRC (Petten).

The dissemination of the information resulting from the implementation of the non-nuclear parts of the programme was carried out in accordance with Council Regulation (EEC) No 2380/74 of 17 September 1974 (Official Journal No L 255 of 20.9.1974) which adopts provisions for the dissemination of information relating to research programmes for the European Community.

The Meeting Point project was set up to act as a focal point for the development of contacts, exchange of information and definition of research requirements among all interested sectors in the Community and for third countries.
