Research programme (EEC) for the protection of the environment (indirect project), 1973-1975

 
This first Community research programme for the protection of the environment was established in view of the aims of the Treaty of the European Economic Community to promote a harmonious development of economic activities throughout the Community and an improvement in living and working conditions in the Member States. It formed the basis of the succeeding Community research programmes on the environment and on environmental protection.
To acquire the scientific and technical know-how necessary in order to implement the environmental programme of the Community with regard to environmental protection.
- Setting up a data bank on chemical products likely to contaminate the environment;
- Harmful effects of lead;
- Epidemiological surveys of the effects of air and water pollution;
- Effects of micro-pollutants on man;
- Assessment of the ecological effects of water pollutants;
- Teledetection of atmospheric pollution.
The Commission was responsible for the implementation of the programme and was required to submit an annual report to the Council. Surveys and laboratory work were carried out under shared-cost contracts. The information resulting from the implementation of the programme was required to be disseminated in accordance with Council Regulation (EEC) No 2380/74 of 17 September 1974.
