Miniaturizing Electronics (ELMO) 2002 - 2005

The total budget of the programme is approximately 100 Million EUR.
The objectives of ELMO are:
_ to promote the technological leadership of Finland in the sub-areas that are critical from the point of view of the electronics sector
_ to create preconditions for new business opportunities
_ to increase mental human resources by encouraging research institutes and enterprises to participate in long-term research
_ to develop the innovation environment by enchancing interaction between various parties
_ to develop co-operation networks and the control of the value chain
_ to spur small and medium-sized enterprises to renew their operations

The key ELMO technologies are the following:
- Micro-electronics and its materials, especially the research on silicon, compound semiconductors and optical materials,
- substrates, and packaging, together with the related processes, analyses and characterising.
- Manufacturing, production, and testing; module precision mechanics and manufacturing, mechatronics and product processes.
- Integrated systems with a tested prototype as an outcome, such as System on Chip. Future technologies. This includes long-term research projects and preliminary surveys that are used to create new preparedness and to steer ELMO Programme to the right direction.

The generic technologies supporting the value chain are the following:
- Embedded software and generic middleware, software platforms.
- Tools and methods; integrated design, modelling and simulation, reliability.
- Reliability and environment; tools, methods, the impact of environmental requirements on reliability.
