HIGH SPEED COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS SUPPORTING MULTIMEDIA APPLICATION SELECTED ISSUES

Objective

The main goals of the project are :

(i) Specification, implementation and analysis of properties of the Xpress Transfer Protocol (XTP).
(ii) The building an experimental optical network system for multimedia applications for a typical scientific institution (university department).
(iii) The using the experimental network to carry the traffic generated by multimedia application by means of prototypes of XTP protocol considered within (i).

The realisation of this project is organised in two workpackges :

The main objective of the first work package is to design, install and test a high-speed optical network system of the PON type, supporting the FDDI and FITL applications for multimedia transport. The system will be composed of several workstations (Sun, HP) and PCs, equipped with FDDI cards and interconnected by an optical cable infrastructure. Two such (twin) systems will be installed at the Institute of Telecommunications, Warsaw University of Technology and at the University of Transportation and Communications in Zilina.

This second work package considers development process for a high speed network protocol supporting multimedia applications, which starts with a formal specification of the designed protocol and ends up with a system implementation. All stages of this process are assisted by automatic tools. The main problem consists in whether protocol efficiency objectives can be incorporated in the development process in order to obtain early estimations of the implied implementation, i.e.. before the actual implementation.

The project will investigate a possible constructive solution to this problem. It proposes to develop and use software tools for efficiency evaluation of communication protocols specified in Estelle and SDL, and to experiment them on a real-life example of a new high-speed transfer/transport protocol XTP being now under process of investigation.
