RIDER addresses the issue of Decision-Making in Manufacturing in real-time terms and it is based on a decision-making core prototype that can be used as the basis for instantiation to various production facilities. In this context, the RIDER framework utilises distributed decision-making techniques in the production level. This framework is based on a distributed agent architecture that is designed to incorporate the complexity and the detail of a manufacturing system. The decision-making process currently employed by RIDER is similar to the procedure a human undertakes when making a choice: - Determining the relevant cost-based criteria according to overall business objectives. - Determining a set of alternatives. - Determining the consequences of the different alternatives with respect to the criteria. - Considering all the aforementioned information and applying one or more decision-making rules to select the best choice. The RIDER tool is capable of suggesting local alternatives to the supervisors / operators, affecting a small part of the production line, when an event or contingency such as machine breakdown has taken place. The RIDER tool is scalable and it can be used in manufacturing environments of varying size and production activities. Through its generic Application Programming Interface (API), it can be customised according to the end user's requirements. The RIDER tool is currently installed in a cable factory and in a textile company. The expected impacts of the RIDER application are: improvement of the operating equipment efficiency reduced inventory cost improved final product quality improvement of the working conditions of the people dealing with everyday decisions in the production floor, utilising the ability of the tool to provide efficient decisions in real time.
