Objective
There is currently an exercise boom in Europe, but this has produced an unacceptably high incidence of sports injuries. In Ireland, the average athlete spends 14% of his or her time injured and published studies suggest that the incidence of injury in European countries is likely to be similar. Both the World Health Organisation and the Council of Europe has the reduction of the incidence of sports injuries as one of their objectives for the 1990s. The proposed interactive multimedia guide to exercising safely and avoiding sports injuries will be a significant contribution to achieving this aim.
PlaySafe will promote the correct way of exercising, to make people understand the risks and type of injury common for a given sport, how to recognise if they are prone to injuries, how to avoid sustaining the injuries through special preparatory exercises. As well as providing relevant information of a general nature, the key feature of PlaySafe is that it will provide exercise and training programme specific to the individual. Upon completing use of the system, PlaySafe will print out a summary exercise plan for the user to take away with them and follow.
It is proposed that the multimedia information system will be provided on an affordable PC compatible delivery platform equipped with a sound card and CD-ROM drive. This could be housed in a single podium and the user would interact with PlaySafe through a touch sensitive screen or, if being used with an MPC compatible machine, with a mouse. The system could be used by individuals or alternatively, in a health studio or gym situation, hooked up to a video projector for an instructor to give group demonstrations on exercising technique, dietary advice, and the medical considerations to bear in mind before commencing an exercise programme.
photographic images, computer animation, graphics and concise text with carefully chosen narration and background music audio. Where required to enhance understanding, digitised video sequences with computer generated text and graphic overlays will be used. PlaySafe will be available in a number of European languages, and it has been noted that this will involve some additional considerations during its technical and graphical design.
