Under the Maps of Europe

Objective

Under the Maps of Europe presents a selection of geographical, historical, political and economical observations and tools, integrated in to an interactive multimedia package, that will provide a better understanding of the current Europe, its evolution and perspectives. UME targets internationally oriented professionals in both industry and government, teachers and students and the intellectually active who desire a more worldly understanding of events.

Content expertise and production skills available from the French La Sept Video (with Le Dessous des Catres) provide the base form of presentation: high quality animated maps. This material, combined with the multimedia development skills of UNI-C (Denmark), the overall multimedia marketing and product/project management capabilities of VMC (The Netherlands) and the backing of IMPACT (CEC) programme will bring a unique and valuable product to life.

The topic of this title is already established as an ongoing TV and video series. With an eye toward increasing the accessibility of the information and toward economically expanding into new markets, a specific effort is being made to understand and eventually implement an efficient broadcast-video-IMM parallel design and production process.

Presently, the product is to be created using the bridge format for CD-I and CD-ROM-XA. This type of product will allow the same physical disc to be used in both professional PCs and the more consumer oriented CD-I players. This untested assumption will be accessed as often as possible as work progresses.

The interactivity and audiovisual access to the title's information is a primary concern in this early stage. The successful end product design depends on input from the content creators, the software developers, the potential market, and user testing. The following challenge is the technical analysis of what is really possible for the final product given the financial and scheduling constraints and to produce a demonstration of the results.

One of the most challenging tasks of IMM today is forming successful business partnerships. Rarely are so many diverse disciplines required to work in synchronisation. Partners must understand each others special languages to make the physical creation of an IMM product possible. But it is appreciation of the real value of each partners input, both material (ie money) and immaterial (ideas, knowledge), that makes a real partnership. Only this understanding leads to agreements on ownership, copyrights and exploitation that will withstand the test of time. During the Definition phase of work, a demonstration of the title's design and content, plans for creating the first commercial product and solid agreements for the partnership will be completed.
