Interactive Children's Encyclopaedia

Objective

This product is called ICE, which stands for Interactive Children's Encyclopaedia. This is a working title, for we do not intend this product to be truly encyclopaedic. The content will cover a range of subjects of interest to children, but they will not be exhaustive.

The partners in the development phase of the project are VMC (Eindhoven, Netherlands) who are managing and co-ordinating the project and who provide marketing skills, The MultiMedia Corporation (London, England) who are carrying out design and development of the title, Klett (Stuttgart, Germany) and Anaya (Madrid, Spain) both who are their respective countries largest education publishers. ICE will be an innovative combination of source material and interface techniques. It will almost certainly be one of the first consumer applications to use techniques of artificial intelligence to mould the way the disc is perceived by the user. While it will not neglect more conventional methods of finding information, namely menus, the disc will have a browser mode which can be watched with little interaction but which will still be reacting to the viewer by making changes based on what few choices the viewer does make.

The title will be produced in English, German and Spanish. The source of much of the material is high quality educational drawings designed specifically for the age group addressed. These will be dressed up with images, animations and lively audio.
