Objective
Development of a European Laboratory to support the EC sectorial policies on food, agriculture, consumer protection and custom tariffs.
The following activities have been investigated:
detection of vegetable proteins (soya from 0.5 to 5%) in meat preparations and with different types of thermal treatments has been performed by microscopy, electrophoresys and immunology;
detection of microtoxins in feed stuffs and cereals;
microbiologic testing of various types of cosmetics;
detection of undeclared inexpensive sweeteners in citrus fruit juices with pulsed amperometric dectector (16 out of 40 samples taken in the various European markets contained added sweeteners);
implementation of a European data bank for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) fingerprints of European wines;
activity of the NMR laboratory for the directorate general (DG) Vl needs;
activity on dairy products as the study of a chemical indicator of the heating of milks;
the determination of sterols tryglicerides and fatty acids in European butters.
Progress to end 1991
The implementation of this activity has firstly requested the set up of the various appropriate chemical and microbiological laboratories. These laboratories have been equipped with: NMR, IR, HPLC, GC, TLC, IC, Cappilary Electrophoresys, Refractometry, Polarimetry, Elemental Analysis, Microscopy, Enzymatic and immunological methods, Microbiology, classical food analytical methods, Microbiology, classical food analytical methods etc. Moreover other existing analytical facilities of the Environment Institute will support this activity where necessary. The main aim of this activity is to create a communitary laboratory at service of the Commission's Directions as Agriculture, Industrial Affairs and Internal Market, Consumer Policy Service, detailed programmes for the period 1992-1994 have been recently established (see the pertinent annual schedules S/T Support to a Service of the Commission). The following activities have been investigated :
- Detection of vegetable proteins (soya from 0.5 to 5 %) in meat preparation and with different types of thermal treatments has been performed by microscopy, electrophoresys and immunology;
- Detection of micotoxins in feed stuffs and cereals;
- Microbiologic testing of various types of cosmetics;
- Detection of undeclared inexpensive sweeteners in citrus fruit juices by I.C. with pulsed amperometric detector . 16 out of 40 samples taken in the various European Markets contained added sweeteners;
- Implementation of a European data bank for NMR fingerprints of European wines; activity of the NMR laboratory for the DG. VI needs; acitivity on dairy products as the study of a chemical indicator of the heating of milks, the determination of sterols tryglicerides and fatty acids in European butters, have been reported in the DG. VI Annual Workschedule
Detailed description of work foreseen in 1992 (expected results)
- The work foreseen in 1992 will be the development or the selection of simple analytical techniques to detect the main contaminants in foods (chemical or microbiological origin) especially to deal with emergency situations. These activities will be strongly correlated to the needs of the various communitary services;
- Improvement of the analytical equipment of the food laboratory;
- Bibliographic research related to the risk/benefits of the food treatment and processing systems as food irradiation, microwave ovens etc.
