Objective
The work is directed towards defining communication terminals in terms of their "environment" (kind of network, service, user, etc.) and developing adequate structure and processing facilities, trying to benefit from the emerging technologies tofor providing results useful in the medium term. The objectives are, consequently, to develop such definitions and designs ; to develop the software facilities ; and, finally, to implement and test some selected prototypes.
The main expected benefit will be to obtain innovative "know-how" of high practical value for the industrial development and the production of related advanced terminals by European industries ; as well as to produce secondary products (new algorithms, software, hardware-specific support, etc.) of general scientific and technical importance.
To reach these objectives, the Action has been divided in three Working Groups (two general and one applied) :
WG.1G : Emerging Techniques for Terminal Hardware and Software
WG.2G : Intelligence Distribution and Interfacing (Terminal to Terminal, Terminal to/from Network)
WG.3A : Integrating Transmission, Computing, Processing and User Needs at Terminals for Specific Applications
WG.3.A considers special applications such as medical, educational, etc. ; it may be divided in due course into specialist Sub-Groups.
Current status
Activities effectively started at the First Management Committee Meeting, in Brussels, Belgium on 30 September 1996.
There, it was decided to hold a seminar in Budapest, Hungary in early February, 1997, and a Workshop in Carcasonne or Toulouse, France, in July 1997; their specific objectives being respectively to create links with industries and services in Central and Eastern European countries and to provide scientific and technical contacts for the participants.
A Management Committee meeting will be included in each one of these events.
