A complete specification for a model-independent heterogeneous distributed database system.

Objective

The aim of the project was to establish a complete design specification for a distributed database system : compatibility of logical models, transnational operation, relationship with current practice.

This was a relatively small project of about five man-years.
This project included a demonstration of a three-node system, two nodes in the UK and one node in Belgium, inter-connected through the public X25 network. The demonstration was successful although, as the people who were involved would be the first to admit, rather slow. The principle was however to demonstrate logical functionality and this was more or less achieved.
The work involved specification of the network schema, and design and implementation of the necessary protocols.
The project produced many reports as they dealt with the practicalities of producing their demonstration system.
Other more general topics were also investigated, including :
relationships to programming languages, query optimization and transparency in the system, query language facilities in vendor systems.
