Objective
The ultimate aim of the OMEGA project is to provide a conveniently accessed source of information (metadata) about all relevant geographic data in Europe. This will contain geographic references, classification of data and details of sources of data. Users will access the information through modern object-oriented GIS techniques and interactive multimedia interfaces.
Initially the service will concentrate on topographic and gazetteer sources of data. Later developments can extend to geological, environmental and remote sensed data. Any geographic data may be included, not just that from national mapping agencies.
OMEGA will greatly stimulate the geographic information market and have a role in planning the topographic infrastructure in Europe. The project complements the MEGRIN initiative but does not replace it. CERCO members (the European Mapping Agencies) have endorsed the aims of this work and will cooperate. Close attention will be paid to the standards activity of CEN TC-287.
OMEGA has a very wide market, being relevant to all users of geographic information in Europe. It will allow users to ascertain the availability of data for their applications but, more specifically, will enable intelligent spatial interrogation of data relationships using GIS functions.
Users will be able to access and correlate metadata through such geographical searches using their own language. Extensive use of icons, codes and graphic images will limit the need for text. The target environment for OMEGA is PCs, UNIX workstations and Apple Macintosh, using CD-ROM.
