Road maintenance and maintenance conditions

Objective

- To look into the most effective methods of determining and forecasting weather related adverse road traffic conditions, prepare maps and adopt measures for improving traffic flow

- To calculate the costs and benefits of such methods and projects

- To recommend areas where joint research could be carried out and where standards for joint action could be recommended
This project involves the following areas:
the most effective methods for determining and forecasting weather related adverse road traffic conditions, prepare maps and adopt measures for improving traffic flow;
to calculate the costs and benefits of such methods and actions;
to recommend areas where joint research could be carried out and where standards for joint action could be recommended.
The project has had to be extended to the end of 1990 because of the exceptionally mild winter of 1988-89 prevented the winter tests from being carried out. Since then the research programme has been carried out normally.

The Management Committee is about to draw up its final report. The report will contain proposals for sensors and measuring systems, data transmission and dissemination, fog forecasting, short-term forecasts, a weather atlas, the relationship between weather conditions and accidents and a cost-benefit analyses.
