Objective
The Action will review and assess the development of strategies for interconnecting neighbouring sea and inland ports with each other, in order to better integrate waterborne freight transport operations in a global logistics system.
The Action will assess how Information Technologies (IT) can address/improve port trading requirements in a global logistics system.
Current status
The Action will :
collate information on existing and planned developments of IT in port communities ;
comprehensively examine the reasons for the slow take-off of the use of IT (including EDI) in the waterborne sector ;
analyse the logistics chain and the global intermodal linking processes in which ports are involved ;
define scenarios for the long term telematic needs of ports and their partners ;
design a set of recommendations allowing for the development of tools and actions to enhance and facilitate the use of Telematics (including EDI) in waterborne transport.
To gather the elements required to analyse the logistics chain and to describe IT projects and their operation, a large enquiry, covering almost 120 ports, is conducted throughout Europe. For that purpose sea ports have been grouped in three geographic areas (i.e. the Baltic ; the North Sea & the Atlantic Ocean ; and the Mediterranean & the Black Sea). To address its specificities, a separate group is dealing with the inland ports.
Work planned
In 1997 the data gathered through the enquiry will be analysed. Early in 1998, regional workshops will be held in order to disseminate the results.
