Objective "This proposal will develop cutting-edge technology to better link two rapidly growing industries: laser scanning (aerial and terrestrial) and three-dimensional printing. The solution will circumvent the current methods, which rely upon an intermediary Computer-Aided Design programme. By direct transformation of the data points into printable surfaces, greater levels of automation can be achieved, while producing superior results. Furthermore the intended solution will enable the integration of previously disregarded semantic data such as colour and intensity. For architecture, civil engineering, and urban planning, the resulting technology will offer the immediate benefits of an order of magnitude reduction in time and cost. The proposed innovation is enabled by the immediate access to extremely high quality aerial and terrestrial laser scanning that was collected through the original ERC RETURN grant."
