Objective
The aim of the proposed research is to obtain a consistent description of the hydrodynamic and thermal phenomena in the blast furnace hearth. The mastery of these phenomena is expected to lead to reduction in pig iron cost and an improvement in quality.
Improvements are expected at various levels: (a) in the short term, improvement in the regularity of the thermal and chemical properties of the pig iron, improved control and standardization of tapping procedures; (b) in the medium term, definition of conditions enabling the number of tapping operations per day to be reduced, thereby substantially reducing manufacturing and labour costs; (c) in the long term, increase hearth life through a knowledge of heat losses and monitoring of wear.
