Objective
THE EMERGENCE OF ARRAYS OF X-RAY-SENSITIVE PHOTOSENSORS IS MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO DESIGN A NEW GENERATION OF GAUGES FOR MEASURING THE THICKNESS PROFILE OF HOT-AND COLD-ROLLED STRIP.
IN COMPARISON WITH CURRENT PRACTICE - IN WHICH AT BEST THE RADIATION SOURCE, OR AT WORST THE SOURCE AND SPOT DETECTOR, ARE MOVED PHYSICALLY ACROSS THE STRIP, THUS YIELDING AND OBLIQUE PROFILE IF THE STRIP IS IN MOTION - THIS NEW GAUGE WOULD BE ENTIRELY STATIC AND MODULAR AND WOULD OFFER EXCELLENT SPATIAL RESOLUTION.
THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO EVALUATE THE FEASIBILITY OF SUCH A TECHNIQUE BY TESTING ITS PRECISION IN THE LABORATORY AND THEN BUILDING A PROTOTYPE CAPABLE, FOR EXAMPLE, OF MEASURING EDGE WASTE ON A STRIP MILL.
