Objective
A computer will be used to calculate the fatigue strength to crack initiation in welded structural elements subject to multi-axial complex elastic-plastic stress with constant and alternating main stress lines. The benefit expected is a better knowledge of the behaviour of welded elements under these compound long-term stresses. Designers will then be in a position to draw up optimal plans without being obliged to make allowances for uncertainty by means of undefined safety factors as is proposed currently in the design code. This should lead to considerable savings in material. In addition, the development of the software should be of practical use to the constructors.
