Objective
The aim of this project is to develop the ability of new structural steel grades designed to fulfil the requirements of future offshore markets, in terms of design, fabrication and reliability of welded parts. A rational assessment of yield/tensile ratio shall be considered on the basis of material data provided by other programmes in order to determine to what extent the design rules for high strength tubular joints in the codes are over-cautious. New chemistries of Fe E 350 steels providing sufficient toughness at -50°C for both parent plate and HAZ shall be developed, while a comparative evaluation of normalised, thermomechanically rolled, accelerated cooled and direct quenched steels with a minimum YS of 450 N/mm{2} shall be carried out. Welding under high heat inputs of Arctic grade structural steel while retaining sufficient HAZ toughness, as well as proof of the weldability of higher strength beams for topside structures will also be investigated.
