Objective
This multinational project is aimed at studying and solving the main current problems regarding prediction and modelling of the microstructure of the HAZ of multipass welds and of the resulting toughness of weldments, for a range of high strength steels. The problems involved include fracture risk prediction, combining metallurgical and mechanical theories to explain the toughness properties of multipass welds, the effects of welding conditions and thermal stress relief on internal stress generation, and the measurement of HAZ ductility of heavy welded components. The project will have a direct relevance in the use of modern high strength steels in applications other than the offshore industry.
