Objective
This research project intends to examine improvements in welding techniques for low cycle fatigue applications, at both ambient and elevated temperature, especially weld toe grinding and TIG dressing. Fatigue testing will be carried out on both as-welded and toe dressed joints in ASTM A 515 grade steel. Butt and cruciform joints which are felt to be typical weld details for pressure vessels and other welded structures have been selected. Fatigue crack initiation and propagation studies will be used to develop a fatigue behaviour model.
