Objective
Near net shape casting is currently the most competitive technology for producing beams. Prior to rolling, large beam blanks from continuous casting machines are reheated in a walking beam furnace, which reheats both hot and cold charges as well as different beam blank profiles. The object of this research project is to optimise operation of the furnace with particular emphasis on the following topics: - temperature homogeneity improvements; - improving descalability; - minimising scale losses; - increasing productivity; - metallurgical aspects; - reducing energy consumption; - NOx reduction.
