Variations In Bed Blended Coal Feedstock and its Effect on Blast Furnace Coke Properties

Objective

The aim of this proposal is to find out the influence of variations in composition of blended coal feedstocks on coke properties and - in case of deterioration of the coke - to try to reduce the blend variability. Modern blast furnaces of high productivity not only require a coke of premium quality, but also require high consistency in the feed (coke) properties. If the coke oven battery is operated under constant conditions, it is the consistency of the coal feed, that leads to a coke of constant properties. The operation and control of the bedding systems or blending systems, which are used for homogenisation must be carefully looked at.

Project activities will cover:

- development of a sampling method in order to get reliable information on the heterogeneity of a coal bed;

- extension of the application of an existing petrographic analysis onto coal blends instead of single coals;

- coking trials in pilot scale ovens, in order to determine the influence of observed variations in coal properties on coke properties;

- trials, in order to reduce the blend variability by alterations of the stockpiling system.
