Objective
The proposal is seeking ECSC support for the last three years of a four year programme.
In the first year further monitoring will be carried out beyond that already completed to extend CRE's data base on dioxin emissions, including the development and validation of methods for, the sampling and analysis of bromided dioxins.
In the programme covered by this Proposal (planned to start on July 1 1994) further dioxin and PCB emissions would be monitored including those from non-coal sources and co-fired coal + waste units. This would lead to an inventory of brominated dioxin discharges from coal fired plant and an assessment of dioxin control measures.
The programme of work for which ECSC support is sort will include:
- the completion of a programme to monitor dioxin and PCB emissions from a range of coal fired plants and from non-coal combustion sources (oil, gas, waste). Complete assessment of emissions of dioxins and PCB's arising from co-firing of coal and waste.
- establishment of an inventory of emissions of brominated dioxins from a range of coal-fired plant
- assessment of the effectiveness of measures such as variation of combustion conditions (temperature, residence time, degree of turbulance, excess air) and the use of absorption media such as activated carbon in controlling the emissions of dioxins and PCBs and their appropriateness for application to coal fired plant.
