Objective
This work is aimed at producing a model of the way in which briquettes made from a mixture containing a number of solid fuel and binder components burn in domestic and industrial heating and steam raising equipment. This will enable the performance of specific composition briquettes to be better predicted and will aid their formulation to produce low cost, high performance fuels with minimum emissions to atmosphere.
A range of multicomponent briquettes will be manufactured.
The combustion mechanisms of these briquettes will be studied initially as single briquettes in a specially adapted thermobalance where temperature can be controlled at different levels simulating high and low output. Reactions in different atmospheres will be studied.
A model describing the burning of single briquettes will be proposed.
In particular the influence of manufacture and composition on the efficiency of combustion and the reduction pollutant emissions will be described. Recommendations will be given for a single briquette test to be used to predict performance of a briquetted fuel in the various appliances studied.
