Objective
The project will investigate the ergonomics aspects of the improvement of working conditions for crane operators at the ore and coal wharf of a steel plant. It will consider the following factors:
- Cab design
- Posture:
design of the console-seat system with a view to reducing strain.
- Vision at the workstation:
perception of visual cues (grab, hold and surrounding area of the ship); consultation of the display screen.
- Adaptation of controls:
design of control console; matching to movement sequences to make the operator's work easier.
Work organisation
- Re-scheduling of work (at present two hours' crane operation alternating with two hours of work at ground level).
- Evaluation of aids provided to help the operators adjust after periods of crane operation, which at present are physically and mentally demanding (relaxation training).
- Pooling of crane driving resources within the department, taking into account the characteristics of the population (age, occupational history, training, etc.) so that the workload can be determined and distributed.
Ways and Means to Achieve the Work
The usual ergonomics tools, acknowledge and methods will be used, the principal phases being as follows:
1) Contextual analysis of the project.
2) General study of the system.
3) Activity analysis.
4) Identification of solutions and submissions of recommendations.
5) Ergonomic supervision and monitoring of the start-up phase.
6) Evaluation.
