Objective
The FOCUS project aims to produce the most comprehensive and practical guide available on sustainable development at the local level. By doing so, it aims to facilitate local government action towards sustainable development and to bring about considerable progress in line with the Fifth EC Environmental Action Programme.
The Fifth EC Environmental Action plan highlights the importance of information in enabling environmental progress. FOCUS will combine comprehensive environmental information, computer technology and communications expertise in order to produce accessible, high quality information aimed at local government.
FOCUS is an information toolkit to aid decision making. It will outline a broad policy framework for local sustainable development, and translate it into clear and specific action points. FOCUS will futher allow local authorities (and others) to access information about supporting data such as best practice case studies and policy justifications.
FOCUS will be packaged as a computer database for day to day use in local government in addition, a presentational package will be developed. This will use a combination of text, computer graphics and video images to present information in a concise and attractive format.
Over two years, the IGMB will work with partners in the UK, Ireland and at the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives in order to develop FOCUS, and make it available throughout the EU. When complete, the use of FOCUS will promote information exchange and practical action towards sustainable development across the EU.
