Development of a new system of vocational information and guidance for mechanical industry

Objective

OBJECTIVES
At the present time, the engineering industry is faced with an emerging demand for new qualifications linked to changes in the manufacturing process and in the organisation of labour. As young people are hardly ever directed towards this sector, demand for workers in the engineering industries is far from being met on the labour market. The objective of this project is to encourage not only the development of new qualifications, but also to create a range of tools for analysing the needs of the industry more effectively and therefore informing young people more effectively of these needs when receiving occupational guidance or when looking for their first job.

ACTIVITIES
To begin with, the project will develop a method of identifying training institutions and centres taking part in the project. At the second stage, questionnaires will be sent to different countries in order to identify needs in the engineering sector for vocational skills and qualifications. Based on the results of this survey, the project will design computer software for advising young people on their careers, which meets the needs identified. Finally, this software will be distributed to careers advice and training centres, company associations interested in the project, and to regional and local authorities responsible for training.

PRODUCTS
- Software for occupational guidance according to the needs expressed by a specific industrial sector.
- Documents identifying the needs of the engineering industry for skills and qualifications and the provision of training programmes.
- The setting up of a network of guidance centres using joint methods and tools.
