Objective
The processing of materials with lasers is a key technology with significant economic importance for improving the competitiveness of European industry in relation to Japan and the United States. Laser manufacturing technology includes processes such as laser welding, cutting and ablation for which sophisticated training is required using simulated processes and mathematical modeling.
The purpose of the ELANET pilot project is to improve teaching and training in the laser manufacturing technologies by developing and disseminating innovative teaching tools for industrial companies and universities. Following an evaluation of industrial needs for training tools, a CD-ROM will be produced to perform illustrative simulations of various laser processes.
The materials for the CD-ROM (mathematical models, graphical simulation, video sequences) already exist thanks to the results achieved under previous European research programmes, such as EUREKA. This project aims therefore to identify and develop additional training tools and teaching methods, to be tested on the whole by the network.
The project partnership is the ELANET network of 22 partners from companies, company associations, research bodies and universities in eight Member States, all of whom are end-users of, or trainers for, laser technology.
Impact
This network will strengthen university/enterprise collaboration, as well as develop and disseminate a sophisticated, but low-cost teaching tool for laser manufacturing processes. Particular emphasis is being placed on dissemination in Southern Europe through partners from Spain, Greece and Italy, to balance the educational level in Europe in this high tech field.
