Objective
Young people who leave education and training institutions without adequate qualifications face exclusion from stable employment when they enter the labour market. The aim of this survey and analysis project is to study the institutional relationships between education/training systems and labour market entry in order to evaluate how those relationships can be improved to reduce labour market exclusion among young people.
The first phase will involve the compilation of case-study material on vocational training systems and their linkages with national labour markets in Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and France. The second phase of the study will involve the construction of a cross-national data set based on surveys of school leavers' in the partner countries. The third phase of the study will involve analyses of the comparative data set to explore the prevalence and characteristics of unqualified young people across the four countries, the linkages between educational experiences and initial vocational training among young people, and the labour market situation of unqualified young people approximately one year after leaving school, in particular focusing on their post-school education/training experiences, employment history and the 'quality' of their employment.
Impact
The project will provide a framework for comparing national strategies targeted at young people and will contribute to policy developments in this area at both national and EU level.
