A New Zn-Air Battery Prototype to Overcome Cathode Degradation Through Catalyst Confinement

Innovative zinc-air long-life battery

Zinc-air rechargeable batteries are considered a viable alternative for sustainable energy storage due to their high energy density, the use of abundant materials with low environmental effects and safe operation. However, some technical limitations, such as the degradation occurring at the cathode and the corrosion of the anode, obstruct reversibility and long battery life. The EU-funded ZABCAT project proposes a methodology that enables the protection of the (electro)catalytic centres, avoiding cathode degradation and anode corrosion, extending their life, improving behaviour in real-life conditions and resolving current problems in the electrodes. Consequently, based on this technology, new electrodes will be fabricated to be later tested in pre-industrial battery prototypes.

Objective

Zinc-air rechargeable batteries are a promising alternative for sustainable energy storage, thanks to their high energy density and the use of abundant materials with low environmental impact, as well as their safe operation. However, they still have some technological limitations that prevent their current capacity from being completely satisfactory, especially because of the degradation that occurs at the cathode and corrosion of the anode, which ultimately limit both the reversibility and a long battery life. The proposed methodology allows to protect the (electro)catalytic centers. In this way, it is intended to extend its useful life, improving both its behavior in real conditions, and solving the existing problems in the electrodes. Thus, based on this technology, new electrodes will be manufactured that will later be tested in pre-industrial battery prototypes
