Objective
Human factors account for a large percentage of accidents in the aircraft maintenance industry. With changes in the nature of the maintenance task, the move towards recognised standards in training and the IATA objective to reduce accidents by 50% by the year 2004, human factor safety training in the industry is urgently need.
This project aims to promote a best practice approach to human factor training through the design, testing and evaluation of a training programme adapted to specific user needs. The programme will comprise a core module and subsidiary modules for specialised groups : trainers, managers, supervisors, maintenance engineers, accident/incident investigators. Training materials will be tested by end-user organisations (SAS, Aer Lingus) in a best practice perspective. Performance indicators will be used on a before and after basis to assess the impact of training not only on knowledge, attitudes and social climate, but on outcome measures such as incident rates, auditing and costs.
Cooperation with outside authorities and professional organisations will ensure that the training programme meets European and international standards.
Impact
The project will promote technology transfer and be instrumental in the development of a new European standard for human factor training in aircraft maintenance organisations.
