Objective
A person who needs vision services is one who, with standard optical corrections, is unable to perform the visual tasks needed in vocational and social settings. Low vision is a condition which affects one in 60 of the general population; in Europe alone it is estimated that 11 million people have low vision (in addition to one million people who are blind). Surveys have shown that 60-80% of people with low vision can be helped with low vision aids. However, few people actually use these aids outside clinics.
The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive vocational training programme for 'low vision therapists' and other professionals who are involved in providing a service to people with low vision. The partners will draw upon the best practice in, and the experience of our European network of training agencies and service providers. The training will ultimately be available in a variety of formats, likely to include college-based learning, practice elements, distance learning and recognition of acquired prior experience and learning.
Impact
This project will broaden the dimensions of professional low vision training, leading to a greatly improved service for people who are visually impaired. It will have a huge impact upon the 'quality of life' of hundreds of thousands of people with low vision by enabling them to use their residual vision to the best possible extent.
