CHARACTERISATION OF PATHOGENIC RACES IN BROOMRAPE OF SUNFLOWER AND DEVELOPMENT OF RESISTANCE TO THEM BY CONVENTIONAL AND BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES

Objective

The objective of the project is to improve the resistance of sunflower to the parasitic plant, broomrape (Orobanche cernua). This is a major problem in parts of Spain and other non-EC European countries, especially in the Balkans.
The work involves characterisation of Orobanche races using RAPD and RFLP techniques as a more rapid aid to selection for resistance. These techniques will also be used to mark host resistance.
