Objective The objective of the project is to improve the resistance of sunflower to the parasitic plant, broomrape (Orobanche cernua). This is a major problem in parts of Spain and other non-EC European countries, especially in the Balkans. The work involves characterisation of Orobanche races using RAPD and RFLP techniques as a more rapid aid to selection for resistance. These techniques will also be used to mark host resistance.
