Objective
The objectives of the project are the following ones:
a) To develop a model for crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) populations management and production in rice fields, assuming that crayfish populations size will be controlled by their use as a resource and by the use of a non harmful chemical procedure (see b). The model will be applied on data available from two sites in the Iberian Peninsula.
b) To develop a non harmful chemical procedure for controlling the size and the physiological activity of crayfish populations, in order to assist the rice farming, and simultaneously to allow crayfish production in rice fields, making both activities profitable. The pilot assays of this no harmful chemical procedure will be carried out in the laboratory, followed by field extension in study sites in Portugal and Spain.
c) To develop a "best possible strategy" on the basis of the model results using a combination of crayfish harvest and the non harmful chemical procedure mentioned in b.
