Objetivo
The project aims to demonstrate the technical and financial viability of a 30 MWe atmospheric pressure circulating fluid bed biomass gasifier/combined cycle plant. The fuel gas is -after cleaning- fed to a modified aeroderivative gas turbine originally developed for natural gas. During 7446 hours per year electricity will be produced with an efficiency of 41%, based on the lower heating value of the fuel, resulting in a yearly production of 225.5 GWh (47026 TOE primary energy). The plant will be commissioned and operated in the first months with a wood chips and subsequently fuelled with a range of biomass/waste fuels in order to arrive at an optimum mix of fuels in terms of price, availability and monitoring results; the emissions will be less than the strict Dutch standards for waste incineration (which are more stringent than the power production standards).L%
Expected results:
- Electricity production of 225.5 GWh per year (7446 hrs x 30.29 MWe)
- Reduction of combustion/land filling of organic waste of 150000 tonnes/year.
- Reduction of CO2 emissions of 177500 tonnes/year, as a result of power production from biomass waste materials in a BIG/CC plant, compared to coal-fired power plant.
- Meeting the very strict Dutch emission standards for waste incineration.
- Demonstration of the technical and economical viability of the concept.
- The implementation of an important reference project for this capacity and larger plants in the future.
Innovative aspects:
- A biomass Integrated Gasification/Combined Cycle plant at a capacity of 30 MWe has not yet been built so far.
- The use of a mix of feed stocks such as SRF, waste wood, verge grass, Miscanthus, cacao shells, waste paper, sewage sludge and RDF is new.
- The use of a modified aeroderivative gas turbine, originally developed for natural gas. By using a modified turbine the costs are substantially reduced compared to a completely new development.
