Objective
Anaerobic treatment of 40000 t/y separately collected VGF, producing biogas and compost that can be used as soil ameliorator. 6000 t of paper and cardboard will be added. The aim is to demonstrate that by this addition and improved pre-treatment, the fermentation process is more efficient and the compost of a better quality. The plant will consist of 2 digesters of each 3300 m3 and will produce 2,8 mio. m3 methane per year. The generated biogas will be delivered to a nearby already existing biogas treatment plant for upgrading to the national grid.
The SMB which groups the 20 municipalities of the region of Tilburg decided to build a fermentation plant for the anaerobic treatment of VGF-waste (Vegetable and Green Fraction of the municipal waste). The plant is built by Stork Protech and Valorga Ingenierie and uses the dry fermentation process patented by Valorga.
The plant consists in the following units :
- a primary line for the reception and sorting of the VGF waste with a storage capacity of 300 m3.
- the waste entering the processing line is first sheared to a particle size smaller than 100 mm and mixed with the excess water of the process to a mixture of 30% dry contents. It feeds two digesters totally closed and insulated of 3000 m3 capacity each. The mixture is regularly stirred through recirculation of the biogas produced.
The biogas production reaches 106 m3 per tonne of waste.
- At the outlet, the digested matter is extracted and pressed into filterpress to a dry content of 50%. The dry matter is stored to be composted. Process water is centrifuged and partly recirculated for the waste preparation.
- The biogas produced with a 55% methane content is send to the existing biogas treatment plant of the Tilburg Landfill site to remove CO2, H2S and water. After cleaning, the gas is delivered to the gas grid for distribution.
The project plan is composed as follows :
1. Engineering/design
2. Procurement
3. Construction
4. Commissioning, Start-up, Test, Stabilization
5. Dissemination
