OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS FOR A CONTINUOUS MINING SYSTEM IN A HARD ROCK OPEN PIT MINE

Obiettivo

A prototype surface miner SM 2100 EX was developed and tested during 4 intensive test sequences. The research partners investigated the different tested cutting systems concerning applicability in hard rocks. These results were combined with the measurements for both times and performance and with the rockmechanical measurements in order to create a rock property checklist vs. machine performance. In addition, a mine planning taking into account the operational conditions of this surface miner system was carried out. Based on this mine planning the expected specific production costs for the system have been determined. Paying respect to the fact that the surface miner technology includes also a crushing step a comparison with drill & blast has been done. Furthermore, construction details for improvement of the surface miner SM 2100 EX have been investigated as well as the direction of further development.
The proposed research is directed at developing operational conditions for continuous mining systems in hard rock quarries, to be tried out in a Portuguese pegmatite testbed with granite underground.

European and international designed surface miners have improved their digning conditions during the last 10 years especially for hard coal, soft rock stones and limestone. For underground potash street preparation bench milling miners have been introduced. Up to now classic hard rock technology is based on diamond saw and controlled blasting techniques. More and more environmental laws do not allow traditional techniques for mining and crushing in the vicinity of settlements, these directions also intensify the situation towards the obligation to exploit even small deposits. To stay competitive and economical, research tasks are therefore

- Developing an economical surface miner for hard rock conditions
- Developing the typical mine design and operational conditions for the general use of continuous hard rock miners with integrated environmental aspects
- Mine technical, rock mechanical and economical evaluation for this new quarrying technique

Expected targets (results) are :

- The possibility of economical operations, new bounders of continuous hare rock cutting
- Savings on mine machinery and supporting systems (an excavator, crusher spreader and road preparator in one machine)
- Savings on transport (reduction of crushing, careful treatment of tyres, higher loading capacity)
- Applications for other mining mineral branches and street preparations
- Mining possibilities according to environmental demands.
