DEVELOPMENT OF HARD CARBON-BASED COATINGS FOR OIL FREE TRIBOLOGICAL SYSTEMS FOR HANDLING AND RECOVERY OF POLLUTING CHEMICALS (COTE : COATINGS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT)

Objectif

To focus the development effort two research vehicles have been selected, both involve oil free applications. Suitable substrate materials have been identified. Four different process technologies have been developed for the deposition of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) and diamond coatings for selected materials; laser ablation, microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (microwave PACVD), radio frequency (RF) PACVD and magnetron sputter deposition. Three tribological test systems have been employed for the research vehicles. A large number of test coatings have been produced by the four deposition methods. The coatings have been tested and ordered with respect to tribological performance. One of the process technologies, RF PACVD, has been selected for a scaled up deposition system.
Achievements of the project will include :

(1) The development of new carbon-based coatings with improved oil free tribological properties

(2) The identification of interlayer structures and compositions to improve loading capacity of such films on a range of engineering materials

(3) Improvement in the quality and reliability of engineered surfaces

(4) An overall improvement in European capability in the field of friction and wear testing (including vacuum conditions)

(5) The development of coatings for handling and recovering polluting chemicals

(6) The replacement of oil as a sealing fluid in a large scale of applications (no waste oil, no PCB contaminants).
