Mise au point d'un procédé et d'un logiciel de simulation d'un incendie en ouvrage soutérrain


Objectives and content
This RDT program aims at setting up a new reliable tool, for the design and optimisation of ventilation in Subways and Railway Tunnels, taking into account the various nocive effects of an underground fire. This tool should help to increase safety and reduce the direct and indirect costs of ventilation.
The research will consist of building up a new set of 1D, 2D, 3D simulation softwares, and of validating them by using a hot-fumes generator installed on a subway wagon, with a 250 °C - 2 MW capacity. The main advantage of using hot fumes for validation purposes, instead of real fires, is to have a better control of fire parameters, to perform the tests on-site (and not in a test gallery), and to re-run them whenever necessary. Experiments will allow comparison between the caracteristics of hot fumes, and of smoke emitted by typical fires.
Softwares will include a general view of the reaction of the ventilation system to the fire (1D program), interfaced with local simulations in tunnels and subway stations (3D, and 2D for complex geometries). They are designed to be used together with the hot-fumes validation device.
This program will be jointly carried out by two engineering companies (TEC INGENIERIE (F) and W.S. ATKINS (G.B.)) one Research organism (Health Safety Executive (G.B.)) and two Subway transport companies (RATP (F), STIB (B)). This group will publish some pre-normative recommendations aimed at reducing disparities between Subway ventilation design in the various European countries.
