The effects of leather processing on area yield

Ziel

Area yield is essential to the leather industry. Tanners purchase skins and hides, the raw material of leather making, by weight and then sell the processed leather by area. Leather manufacture results in a considerable number of dimensional changes due to chemical interactions between process chemicals and the substrate. These changes have direct commercial implications to the tanner and are therefore great importance if profit margins are to be maintained. Many techniques, instruments and processes have been implemented into the leather industry so as to ensure high yields are obtained from raw material. Little consideration or planning has been taken during these implementations and they do not address the problems of process control, an issue shown to be of great importance to area yield. This project therefore aims to Investigate each step of the leather production process to determine which parameters most effect area yield, Evaluate in particular the drying and post tanning operations, including comparisons of each of the more common drying methods. Determine the effects of humectants on retention of area yield. Produce the best practices for production scheduling to obtain maximum area yield. Sench mark the leather production in terms of area yield.
