Sensitive issues in plastics component design

Obiettivo

Plastics products suffer from a high incidence of failure due to a low level of awareness amongst product designers and engineers of the critical phenomenological issues that determine product integrity, quality, and durability. The objective of this project is to provide SMEs that are too small to justify the employment of specialist Plastics Engineers, with a powerful, comprehensive yet understandable knowledge based design tool that will highlight the sensitive issues in plastics component design. An "inference engine" containing rules, relationships, criteria, data, and phenomenological descriptions will be constructed which provides for disciplined fail safe access to specific parts of a very large knowledge base in a form that is understandable and useable by SME's. The output of this proposed project will provide benefits to the skills base both as an aid to Education and training and as an aid to the efficient optimisation of such tasks as material selection, product design, tool design processing and product testing. As plastics products and components are used in critical applications, a reduction in structural failures will benefit the Community in terms of improved safety. If adopted by just 5 % of the supply chain, the benefits to the Community will be approximately 14.5 million ECU through reduced product development timescales, losses due to failure or faults and material costs.
